President Zardari to attend emergency Islamic summit muftpakistan

ISLAMABAD: Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz has invited world Muslim leaders including President Asif Ali Zardari to attend a two-day extraordinary emergency Islamic summit in Makkah on the 27th of Ramazan (August 14-15).

The government of Pakistan has decided to participate in the summit and will convey its willingness to Saudi Arabia next week. The summit will deliberate upon the threats of fragmentation and sedition being faced by the Muslim world and would provide an opportunity to Muslim leaders to discuss the problems of the Ummah.

Diplomatic sources told The News on Friday that Pakistan would also avail itself of the opportunity to highlight the threats being faced by Pakistan and the Afghan issue will also figure prominently at the discussion.

Saudi Arabia Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Saleh Al-Ghadeer, who is currently in Riyadh, is holding consultations regarding the summit. He is hopeful that Pakistan would participate in the summit with a delegation and the summit will play a significant role in bringing unity among the Muslim Ummah.

The formal agenda is being chalked out at the headquarters of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah and would be made public in a couple of days. This will be the 12th summit of the OIC since its inception in 1969 while it would be the 4th extraordinary summit. The earlier three summits were held in Pakistan in March 1997, Doha (Qatar) in March 2003 and Makkah in December 2005.

The reaction of Syrian leader Bashar-el-Asad and Iranian leader Ahmadi Nejad about the summit would be interesting to note. Ahmadi Nejad attended the last Makkah summit in 2005. It adopted a ten-year action plan to strengthen the 57-member organisation, the second largest after the UN.

It is pertinent to note that Saudi King has ordered a major fund-raising programme for the Syrians to alleviate their sufferings. The Saudi Interir Ministry urged all citizens to contribute generously to the fund during the holy month of Ramazan. The announcement has come amid heightened violence across Syria, where Opposition activistssay more than 17,000 people have been killed since the popular uprising erupted in March 2011 against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. Pakistan has also been sympathising with the people of Syria. Saudi Arabia and the other peace-loving countries in the Gulf region have repeatedly voiced support for Syrian rebels fighting the Assad government.

Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa said he would attend the conference. OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu met Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi in Cairo last week and discussed the main issues to be taken up at the Makkah Summit.

He also discussed the Syrian crisis and the situation of the Muslims in Myanmar with the Egyptian president. It is likely that the Myanmar situation will also be part of the discussions in the Makkah summit.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal has been quoted as saying that such a summit was essential to strengthen the Muslim unity and serve the interests of Islam and the Muslims. “We hope the summit will reflect the hopes and aspirations of the Ummah,” he said.

King Abdullah has started sending invitations to heads of states of OIC countries to attend the summit. It is expected that a large number of the Muslim countries would be represented in the summit through their heads of states and governments. President Asif Ali Zardari will hold discussions with fellow leaders turning up for the summit, sources added.

MuftPakistan: NATO condemns cross-border shelling

KABUL: NATO's military force in Afghanistan has condemned cross-border shelling from Pakistan, after Kabul warned that it could significantly harm relations between the strife-torn neighbours.

Afghanistan's warning came on Sunday after officials said more than 300 heavy artillery shells and rockets were fired from Pakistan into Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province over two days, killing at least four people.

Last month, a barrage of cross-border fire from Pakistan into Kunar forced thousands of villagers to flee their homes after Islamabad accused Kabul of protecting militants who infiltrated to kill 13 Pakistani soldiers.

Afghanistan and Pakistan typically blame each other for violence by Taliban Islamic militants plaguing both sides of their border, known as the Durand Line.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force "condemns the indirect fire attacks from across the Durand Line", ISAF said in a statement late Wednesday.

"We continue to work with the Afghan ministry of defence, and the Pakistan government to ensure an end of these attacks."

ISAF welcomed the announcement by the Afghan foreign ministry that talks on the issue would be held soon between officials from both sides in Afghanistan's eastern city of Jalalabad.

Pakistan on Sunday denied Afghanistan's charge of cross-border shelling, calling it "incorrect".

"Pakistani troops only respond to and engage militants from where they are attacked/fired upon," said a senior military official in Islamabad.

Over the last year he said at least 15 cross-border attacks were carried out by militants against Pakistani check points and the civilian populations in northwestern towns of Dir and Chitral.

NATO has some 130,000 US-led troops in Afghanistan helping the government of President Hamid Karzai fight Taliban Islamist insurgents.

Khadija Mastoor was born in Bareili in 1927. She started writing short stories in 1942 and continued writing till her death, having published over 5 collections of short stories and 2 novels.

Her novel “Aangan” is regarded a literary landmark in Urdu. Her younger sister Hajra Masroor is also an accomplished short story writer.

Khadija Mastoor died in London in 1982 and was buried in Lahore.

US declares Afghanistan major non-NATO ally

KABUL, Afghanistan: The Obama administration on Saturday declared Afghanistan the United States' newest "major non-NATO ally," an action designed to facilitate close defense cooperation after U.S. combat troops withdraw from the country in 2014 and as a political statement of support for Afghanistan's long-term stability.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced that President Barack Obama had designated Afghanistan as a major non-NATO ally shortly after arriving in the country for talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

"We see this as a powerful commitment to Afghanistan's future," she said at a news conference in the grand courtyard of Kabul's Presidential Palace. "We are not even imagining abandoning Afghanistan."

Clinton insisted that progress was coming incrementally but consistently to the war-torn nation after decades of conflict. "The security situation is more stable," she said. Afghan forces "are improving their capacity."

At the news conference, Karzai welcomed Clinton to Kabul and thanked the U.S. for its continued support.

Clinton repeated the tenets of America's "fight, talk, build" strategy for Afghanistan. The goal aims first to defeat dangerous extremists, win over Taliban militants and others willing to give up violence and help in the long reconstruction of Afghanistan ahead.

Fighting still rages as Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces battle insurgents in the mostly eastern part of the country. Although casualties have fallen among foreign forces as the United States and other nations begin a gradual withdrawal, 215 coalition soldiers were killed in the first six months of the year — compared to 271 in the same period last year.

Reconciliation efforts haven't gained steam, but Clinton said she was pleased to be meeting the foreign ministers of Afghanistan and Pakistan together in Tokyo — a three-way relationship seen as key to stabilizing Afghanistan.

From Kabul, Clinton was heading to Japan for an international conference on Afghan civilian assistance. Donors are expected to pledge around $4 billion a year in long-term civilian support.

Karzai was also attending the conference.

Clinton stressed the importance of the pledges for civilian aid. Afghanistan's cash-strapped government is heavily dependent on foreign largesse, and any significant drop-off in financial assistance after 2014 could set back the country's development.

Asked about the systemic corruption that has plagued the Afghan government, Clinton said the U.S. was working hard with Afghan authorities to eliminate fraud, mismanagement abuse. She said the meeting in Tokyo would include accountability measures to ensure that money sent to Afghanistan benefits the Afghan people.

"This is an issue the government and the people of Afghanistan want action on, and we want to ensure they are successful," Clinton said.

Nations that once gave more generously to Afghanistan are now seeking guarantees that their taxpayer money will not be lost to corruption and mismanagement.

International donors say that many promises to crack down on corruption have not been carried out. Some highly placed Afghan officials have been investigated for corruption but seldom prosecuted, and some of the graft investigations have come close to the president himself.

In Tokyo, representatives from some 70 countries and organizations will establish accountability guidelines to ensure that Afghanistan does more to improve governance and finance management, and to safeguard the democratic process, rule of law and human rights — especially those of women.

On the major non-NATO ally designation, Clinton said Afghanistan would have access to U.S. defense supplies and training and cooperation.

"This is the kind of relationship that we think will be especially beneficial as we plan for the transition," she said. "It will help the Afghan military expand its capacity and have a broader relationship with the United States."

Designating Afghanistan as a major non-NATO ally was part of a Strategic Partnership Agreement signed by Presidents Obama and Karzai in Kabul at the beginning of May.

On July 4, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Ryan Crocker, and the country's foreign minister announced that the two countries had completed their internal processes to ratify the agreement, which has now gone into force.

The declaration allows for streamlined defense cooperation, including expedited purchasing ability of American equipment and easier export control regulations. Afghanistan's military, which is heavily dependent on American and foreign assistance, already enjoys many of these benefits. The non-NATO ally status guarantees it will continue to do so.

Afghanistan becomes the 15th such country the U.S. has declared a major non-NATO ally. Others include Australia, Egypt, Israel and Japan. Afghanistan's neighbor Pakistan was the last nation to gain the status in 2004.

Clinton arrived in Afghanistan from Paris, where she attended a 100-nation conference on Syria.

PARIS: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will meet Pakistan's foreign minister in Tokyo on Sunday, seeking to push momentum for better ties after Islamabad agreed to reopen land routes used to supply troops in Afghanistan following a seventh-month freeze, a U.S. official said.
Clinton this week apologized for a November NATO air strike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, and Islamabad responded by reopening the overland supply routes that are crucial to the U.S-led war in Afghanistan.

Clinton will meet Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar on the sidelines of a Tokyo conference on Afghanistan, a senior U.S. official with Clinton in Paris said on Friday.

Clinton delivered the U.S. apology - long sought by Pakistan but resisted by the Obama administration - in a telephone conversation with Khar this week and the two pledged to work to improve relations, which have taken a nosedive since U.S. forces killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on Pakistani territory last year.

The supply route deal removed one headache, but ties are likely to remain strained by other differences including Pakistan's opposition to U.S. drone strikes on its territory, and Washington's allegations that Islamabad condones, or even assists, anti-American militants.

U.S. officials regarded the supply routes as particularly important as the United States and its NATO partners plan to withdraw the bulk of the 128,000 soldiers they have deployed in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Clinton left Thursday on a marathon overseas trip that also includes stops in Mongolia, Laos, Vietnam, Egypt and Israel. AGENCIES

India, Pakistan talks take place amid fresh tensionsNEW DELHI: India and Pakistan's foreign secretaries were to meet Wednesday to bolster a fragile peace dialogue undermined by political flux in Pakistan and fresh tensions over the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
A senior Indian government official said the talks in New Delhi between Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai and his Pakistani counterpart Jalil Abbas Jilani had the sole aim of keeping the "dialogue process on track."

Their meeting was to have taken place at the end of last month, but was postponed in the uncertainty that followed the Pakistani Supreme Court's dismissal of Yousuf Raza Gilani as prime minister.

Analysts said the upheaval in Islamabad had taken some of the momentum out of the peace dialogue between the nuclear-armed South Asian rivals, who have fought three wars since the sub-continent was partitioned in 1947.

Moreover, the atmosphere has been soured by India's arrest of a man suspected of being a key handler for the 10 Pakistan-based militants who carried out the 2008 Mumbai attacks, killing 166 people.

India says the suspect has admitted helping to coordinate the deadly assault from a command post in Karachi, and his testimony has renewed Indian accusations that "state elements" in Pakistan were involved.

"The blame game has started again and the secretaries' meeting comes at a crucial juncture," said Wilson John, a foreign policy analyst at the Observer Research Foundation, an independent think tank in New Delhi.

"Too much heat and dust has been stirred up at various levels."

Pakistan has indicted seven people for their alleged role in the Mumbai attacks but their trial, which began in 2009, has been beset by delays.

India suspended a four-year peace process with Pakistan after the attacks and talks only resumed in February last year.

With both sides still deadlocked on their core dispute over the divided Himalayan territory of Kashmir, they have sought to make progress in less contentious subjects like bilateral trade.

They have also agreed to enhance cooperation on terrorism, human trafficking, narcotics, counterfeit currency and cyber crime.

The foreign secretaries are expected to lay the ground for another round of talks between their respective foreign ministers -- originally scheduled for July 18 but also postponed with a new date yet to be announced.

"No one should expect any substantive outcome from this diplomatic meeting," G. Parthasarthy, former Indian envoy to Pakistan told AFP.

"Who is the real leader in Pakistan and whom should India be talking to? The only significance of the meeting is: Yes, we met and we will continue to meet." AGENCIES muftpakistan.

Severe heat wave to hit country

KARACHI: The country is likely to face a severe heat wave in the next few days as warned by the meteorological department on Saturday, Geo News reported.
 
According to the met department, most parts of the country are already facing high temperatures while Punjab, northern Sindh and a few areas of Balochistan are going to be under the heat spell in the next three to four days.

On the other hand, Makran, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan will get light rain along with strong winds.

Indian prisoner Surjeet released after 27 years

LAHORE: Indian prisoner Surjeet Singh has been released after 27 years from Kot Lakhpat Central Jail, CNBC quotes jail official as saying on Thursday.

The Indian prisoner is being sent to Wahga border crossing amid heavy guard, where he would be handed down to Indian border security force.

Surjeet Singh family has arrived on the border to receive him.

Surjeet Singh was awarded death sentence under Pakistan Army Act in 1985, after he was arrested in 1982. The death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 1989 by then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.

It should be mentioned here that Singh is expected to be repatriated along with 315 Indian fishermen who were yesterday freed from Central Malir Jail in Karachi. The fishermen were released as a goodwill gesture yesterday and sent to Lahore to be deported to their native homeland, officials said.

Kayani ISAF commander to stop Afghan border incursion

ISLAMABAD: The US commander in Afghanistan discussed border coordination with Pakistan's army chief on Wednesday as the Taliban released a video showing the remains of 17 beheaded Pakistani soldiers.

General John Allen, who commands 130,000 NATO troops fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, flew into Chaklala air base and went straight into the talks with General Ashraf Kayani at his Rawalpindi headquarters, before jetting out of the country, officials said.

There was no immediate comment from NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), but a Pakistani official said Kayani demanded greater efforts from the Americans on stopping cross-border incursions.

"It was a routine meeting to discuss the border coordination," a senior Pakistani military official told AFP.

"We also raised the issue of cross-border attacks on the Pakistan military from Afghanistan. We demanded that ISAF take action against the militant sanctuaries in Afghanistan and eliminate the militant groups involved in cross-border attacks inside Pakistan," he added.

Pakistan said around 100 Afghan-based militants crossed the border into the northwestern district of Upper Dir on Sunday. Six soldiers were killed and 11 went missing. Pakistani officials said Tuesday that seven of them were beheaded.

On Wednesday, a senior security official in the northwest admitted that all 17 had in fact been beheaded after the Pakistani Taliban released a video showing the slaughtered heads.

Pakistan's main umbrella Taliban faction claimed responsibility for the attack.

Intelligence officials said the perpetrators were loyalists of Maulana Fazlullah, a Pakistani cleric who led a two-year Taliban insurgency in the northwestern Swat valley before fleeing into Afghanistan to escape an army offensive in 2009.

It was also likely that Allen and Kayani discussed Pakistan's seven-month blockade on overland NATO supplies into Afghanistan after US air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers along the Afghan border on November 26.

US drone strike 'kills at least five' in Pakistan

MIRANSHAH: A US drone strike targeting a militant compound in Norther Waziristan tribal district killed at least five militants late Tuesday, security officials said.

The unmanned aircraft fired two missiles on the compound in the Shawal area, some 50 kilometres southwest of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal district, near the Afghan border.

The area is considered to be a hub of Taliban and Al-Qaeda activity.

"At least five militants have been killed and three have been wounded. The compound was completely destroyed," a senior security official based in Peshawar city told AFP.

All those killed were fighters linked with local warlord Hafiz Gul Bahadur, another security official based in Miranshah told AFP.

Bahadur, who is allied with Afghan Taliban, is accused of fighting US-led troops across the border.

He last week imposed a ban on anti-polio vaccination teams in protest at US drone strikes, officials said.

Local officials told AFP on Tuesday that they had so far failed to convince him to allow the vaccinations.

Bahadur said the ban would remain until the US stops drone attacks in the tribal region.

Islamabad is understood to have approved the strikes on Al-Qaeda and Taliban targets in the past. But the government has become increasingly energetic in its public opposition as relations with Washington have nosedived.

The London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism has said that under President Barack Obama one drone strike has hit Pakistan on average every four days.

It said most of the 2,292 to 2,863 people reported to have died were low-ranking militants, but that only 126 fighters had been named.

It said it had credible reports of between 385 and 775 civilians being killed, including 164 to 168 children.

In the documentary "The Invisible War," director Kirby Dick tackles the harrowing rape epidemic in the U.S. military.

It follows the stories of dozens of female victims of sexual assault and the struggles they faced in their pursuit of justice.

Even before its release date, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced that major changes would be made in the investigations of military rapes, and a top general featured in the film who defends the military's reaction to this issue was replaced. Justice has been, and will hopefully continue to be, served.

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD (June 27)

Director Benh Zeitlin's fantastical, apocalyptic, coming-of-age survival tale follows six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) on her journey to find her lost mother in the wake of her father's disintegrating health - and a series of environmental changes that unleash mythical beasts called the aurochs.

The film nabbed the Grand Jury Prize and Excellence in Cinematography awards in the U.S. dramatic competition this year at Sundance, as well as the Camera d'Or Prize at Cannes.

These top prizes are all the more impressive as the film - inspired by Hurricane Katrina victims who refused to leave their homes - stars an unknown young actress (Wallis) and was directed by a first-time filmmaker (Zeintlin) under fiercely real and difficult conditions.

TAKE THIS WALTZ (June 29)

Michelle Williams follows her Oscar-nominated turn as Marilyn Monroe with the charming Sarah Polley-directed tale of a woman caught in a love triangle.

Williams plays Margot, who must choose between two sweet, loving men: husband Lou (funnyman Seth Rogen) and mystery man-with-an-edge Daniel (eye candy Luke Kirby).

The choice is made all the more difficult as Lou loves Margot unconditionally but feels both too comfortable and unfulfilled. As a result, she pins everything on her constant desire for Daniel.

In the end, the film has serious things to say about love, sex and relationships.

KILLER JOE (June 29)

Matthew McConaughey stars as a bad-ass hit man in "The Exorcist" and "The French Connection" director William Friedkin's upcoming tale of murder, revenge, bloodlust and greed.

The plot revolves around a man (Chris Smith, played by Emile Hirsch) who will be killed if he can't repay a debt. So Smith hires McConaughey's Killer Joe Cooper to finish off his mother in order to collect her life insurance.

Naturally, all hell breaks loose: Killer Joe preys upon Smith's sister Dottie (Juno Temple) and catalyzes the destruction of the family.

This is not a guy to be messed with.

RUBY SPARKS (7/25)

From the creators of the 2006 surprise hit "Little Miss Sunshine" comes an eccentric rom-com about a writer with an incredibly active imagination.

Calvin (the always interesting Paul Dano), a novelist struggling with writer's block, makes a breakthrough with his Zooey Deschanel-esque fictional character, Ruby Sparks (screenwriter Zoe Kazan). Naturally, he falls in love with her; not so naturally, she suddenly appears in the flesh, acting as though they had always been dating.

As the writer in complete control of the situation, Calvin must determine how his great love with Ruby should unravel, and whether it will be a storybook ending.

RED HOOK SUMMER (August 10 in New York, expanding August 24)

Spike Lee returns with another installment of his Chronicles of Brooklyn, which began with his breakout "Do the Right Thing" - a film that gets several nods in this latest work.

An official Sundance selection, "Red Hook" follows Flik Royale (Jules Brown), a middle-class boy from Atlanta who is sent to Brooklyn's Red Hook projects for the summer, to live with his zealous preacher grandfather Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters).

The summer seems to be a failure of epic proportions until Chazz Morningstar (Toni Lysaith) comes along to show Flik that there is an upside to Brooklyn.

But it's not all feel-good coming-of-age sweetness. "Red Hook" sparked a heated debate at Sundance over a sexual act involving Bible scripture. It could end up being Lee's most controversial yet.

                World weather specialists predict heavy monsoon, floods across country



World weather specialists have predicted that extra heavy rains and floods will take place in rivers during current monsoon across the country.

During recent snowfall in Northern areas including Azad Kashmir, all records of the past were broken and now due to increase of temperature, process of snow melting has started there.
According to Meteorological Department, the monsoon rain will shower more than the routine while drought is expected in some parts of Balochistan and Cholistan.
After devastation of floods in 2010, breaches emerged at over 4500 places in river and canals across the country. According to marine experts, extra rains can create more difficulties this year as those thousands of breaches, in rivers and canals, have not been fixed yet.
Owing to the scarcity of dams in Pakistan, the additional water of rains turns into trouble instead of blessing in many parts of the country.

The concerned authorities must complete security arrangements before start of rains to avoid any possible mishap.

        National Engineering Robotics Contest 2012 organized at EME College Rawalpindi
RAWALPINDI: National Engineering Robotics Contest 2012 was organized by NUST, STEM Career Program-HEC and Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) at the College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering (EME) in Rawalpindi.

Dr. Younus Javed, the Dean of Academics in his opening address, welcomed all the teams and honorable guests. He stressed that co- and extra-curricular activities play a very important role in building a sound personality and a successful human being.

He emphasized on the participants that all competitions of human activities are focused for improvements and winning/losing is a byproduct. This is how we will grow as a nation, stated an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release.

Brigadier  Dr. Javaid Iqbal, the Head of Mechatronics Department and Chief Organizer of the contest, informed that more than 170 teams from different Engineering Universities, Colleges and Institutes from all over the country registered for the qualifying round.

Major General Obaid Bin Zakria, HI(M), Commandant College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering in his address welcomed everyone to the National Engineering Robotics Contest 2012, he appreciated how the number of participants had grown over the years and the standard of the competition has risen.

At the end of the ceremony the Chief Guest Dr. Muhammad Akram Sheikh (HI), gave away the prizes to the winning teams of “National Engineering Robotic Contest 2012” (NERC).

In his address the Honorable Chief Guest, Dr. Muhammad Akram Sheikh while complimenting the efforts taken up so vigorously by NUST College of E&ME called “National Engineering Robotics Contest” a one of a kind platform providing the engineering students of Pakistan with an opportunity to get the complete engineering experience.

He said that “Seeing such a huge turnout and the students working with such dedication on one of the most sophisticated field engineering has to offer, I can see the potential of our future engineers”. 

While acknowledging the importance of Mechatronics engineering he commented “Since every machine these days is a blend of several technologies, Mechatronics Engineering as a new discipline has found widespread acceptance in the world, including a large number of developing countries”.
